Der Landkreis Bamberg ist der westlichste Landkreis des Regierungsbezirks Oberfranken in Bayern. Im Westen und Süden grenzt er an die Bezirke Unter- und Mittelfranken. Die kreisfreie Stadt Bamberg ist ganz vom Landkreis umgeben.
Zu ihm gehören auch zwei dicht beieinander liegende Exklaven der Gemeinde Pommersfelden im Süden. In der größeren befinden sich der Limbacher Weiher und der Steinersee. Das Gebiet ist vollständig vom Landkreis Erlangen-Höchstadt umgeben und liegt etwa einen Kilometer vom übrigen Landkreisgebiet entfernt, gehört aber verwaltungsmäßig zum Landkreis Bamberg. Der Landkreis ist Mitglied der Metropolregion Nürnberg.
