Die Hochschulstadt Mittweida ist eine Stadt im Landkreis Mittelsachsen im Bundesland Sachsen. Sie ist Sitz der Verwaltungsgemeinschaft Mittweida.
Die Stadt Mittweida liegt größtenteils westlich des Zschopautals im Mittelsächsischen Bergland. Die Altstadt entstand am Unterlauf des Altmittweidaer Baches unweit der Mündung in die Zschopau. Die meisten Ortsteile liegen beiderseits des Flusses im oder nahe dem Zschopautal. Prägend ist insbesondere die Lage an der Talsperre Kriebstein im Norden der Stadt. Einzig die Ortsteile Frankenau und Thalheim liegen an Frankenauer Bach und Erlbach, die zur Zwickauer Mulde hin entwässern.
