Friedland ist eine Kleinstadt im östlichen Teil des Landkreises Mecklenburgische Seenplatte im Osten Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns. Sie gehört historisch zum Landesteil Mecklenburg. Die seit dem 1. Januar 2004 amtsangehörige Stadt ist Sitz des Amtes Friedland, dem zwei weitere Gemeinden angehören. Der Ort ist ein Grundzentrum nahe dem Oberzentrum Neubrandenburg.
Friedland an der Datze liegt etwa in der Mitte zwischen den Städten Neubrandenburg und Anklam und nordwestlich der Brohmer Berge. Östlich der Stadt breitet sich die nach ihr benannte Friedländer Große Wiese aus. Südwestlich der Stadt befindet sich der Friedländer Mühlenteich.
