Gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs legten die amerikanischen Truppen längs des Rheins Gefangenenlager für deutsche Soldaten an. Bei der Eroberung des Rheinlandes gerieten 250.000 deutsche Soldaten in Kriegsgefangenschaft, nach der Zerschlagung des Ruhrkessels kamen weitere 325.000 hinzu. Ab Mitte April 1945 wurden rund 660.000 Deutsche in diesen Lagern gefangen gehalten.
