Saaremaa ist mit etwa 2672 km² die größte Insel Estlands sowie der Moonsund-Inseln. Sie ist die viertgrößte Ostseeinsel nach Seeland, Gotland und Fünen und begrenzt den Rigaischen Meerbusen nach Norden.Saaremaa ist die Hauptinsel des Kreises Saare , dem die umliegenden Inseln Muhu , Abruka , Vilsandi , Ruhnu sowie diverse kleinere Inseln angehören.
