Der Peipussee ist ein zwischen Estland und Russland gelegenes Binnengewässer. Mit 3555 km² ist er ungefähr siebenmal so groß wie der Bodensee und steht unter den größten Seen Europas an fünfter Stelle – nach dem Ladoga- und dem Onegasee in Russland sowie dem schwedischen Vänern und dem finnischen Saimaa.
Der See erstreckt sich in Nord-Süd-Richtung über 143 km und ist bis zu 50 km breit. Zusammen mit der Narva, seinem Abfluss zur Ostsee, bildet er fast die gesamte östliche Staatsgrenze Estlands zur Russischen Föderation und ist damit seit dem 1. Mai 2004 auch Teil der Außengrenze der Europäischen Union. Von der Gesamtfläche befinden sich 1570 km² auf estnischem Territorium, der größere Teil gehört zu Russland. Er hat über dreißig meist kleinere Zuflüsse.
