Der Ursprung des Dorfes Crillon-le-Brave reicht bis in die römische Zeit zurück, als es Crillonium hieß und später Crillon. Die moderne Geschichte beginnt jedoch im 14. Jahrhundert, als eine angesehene Familie aus Avignon die Feudalrechte über das Dorf erwarb. Eine lange Reihe von Herzögen regierte über Crillon in der Zeit vor der Französischen Revolution. Das Dorf verdankt seinen vollständigen Namen Crillon-le-Brave dem legendärsten Herzog: Louis des Balbes de Berton de Crillon, auch bekannt als "Le Brave Crillon" (1541-1615), einer der tapfersten und mutigsten Generäle von Heinrich IV. während der französischen Religionskriege am Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts. Dieselbe Familie Crillon gab auch dem berühmten Hôtel de Crillon in Paris seinen Namen.
