Die Dordogne wird auch oft Périgord genannt, nach dem Namen der ehemaligen Provinz Périgord, die nahezu mit dem Departement Dordogne übereinstimmt. Die Dordogne ist eine angenehme Region zum Wandern, dank der mittelalterlichen Städte, den prähistorischen Höhlen, den malerischen Schlössern und befestigten Städtchen sowie wegen des Dordogne-Flusses selbst. Es ist möglich, den Dordogne-Fluss mit dem Kanu oder Kajak zu befahren. Kulinarisch bietet die Dordogne unter anderem Trüffel, Foie Gras, Nussöl, 'confits' aus Gänse- und Entenfleisch sowie die halbsüßen Bergerac-Weine.
