Der Jardin des Plantes ist der wichtigste botanische Garten in Frankreich. Der Garten wurde ursprünglich 1626 von Guy de La Brosse, dem Arzt von Ludwig XIII., als Heilkräutergarten angelegt. Er war ursprünglich als Jardin du Roi bekannt. 1640 wurde er für die Öffentlichkeit geöffnet.
Der Jardin des Plantes unterhält eine botanische Schule, die Botaniker ausbildet, Demonstrationsgärten anlegt und Samen austauscht, um die biologische Vielfalt zu erhalten.
Ein großer Wintergarten im Art-Déco-Stil sowie mexikanische und australische Gewächshäuser zeigen regionale Pflanzen, die nicht in Frankreich heimisch sind.
