Die Kapelle von Gabas wurde 1121 nach den Gelübden von Gaston IV, dem Vicomte von Béarn, gegründet. Im selben Jahr wurde sie von Arnaud d'Araux, dem Bischof von Oloron, geweiht: Kapelle Gaston Phebus de Gabas.
An der Kreuzung der Jakobswege durch das Ossau- und das Aspe-Tal ist sie das einzige verbliebene Überbleibsel des Komplexes "Hospital der Barmherzigkeit", der von den Kanonikern des Heiligen Augustinus aus Candanchu betrieben wurde.
