Die Porte Saint-Nicolas wurde während des Baus der Ville Neuve zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts errichtet und bildete den südlichen Durchgangspunkt der Stadt. Sein Name erinnert daran, dass es die Straße nach Saint-Nicolas-de-port öffnete, einer Stadt, die berühmt wurde, weil eine Reliquie des Heiligen Nikolaus (ein Fingerglied) dorthin gebracht wurde. Da er nach der Schlacht um Nancy zum Schutzpatron der Lothringer wurde, gewann seine Verehrung noch mehr an Bedeutung. Die Kirche wurde 2018-2019 restauriert und ist Teil des Erbes der lothringischen Renaissance.
