1984 beschloss der Stadtrat von Bitche, das Tal des Stadtweihers, das sich im Süden der Stadt am Fuße der Zitadelle erstreckt, als Garten anzulegen.
Sehr schnell entstand die Idee, dort Skulpturen aufzustellen und den Garten zu einem Experimentierfeld für zeitgenössische öffentliche Kunst in einer Gemeinde mit 5.800 Einwohnern zu machen. Dieses Experiment ist in Frankreich für eine Stadt dieser Größe einzigartig.
Daher wurden Künstler gebeten, ein Werk für einen bestimmten Ort zu entwerfen, wobei natürlich auch die allgemeine Umgebung berücksichtigt werden sollte. Bisher wurden die folgenden Werke realisiert:
Der Brunnen von Jean Amado
Die kleine Zitadelle von Laurent Amat
Die große Tour von Lovato
Der weiße Strand von Pierre Tual
Die Säule von Bitche von Bernard Pages
Der Kandelaber von Philippe Starck
Weitere Ansiedlungsprojekte sind in Planung.
Der Stadweiherpark und seine Kunstwerke sind das ganze Jahr über frei zugänglich.
