Schon in der Antike war Briarres ein wichtiger Übergang über die Essonne, wie die Etymologie seines Namens beweist, der vom keltischen Wort Briva für Brücke stammt. Diese Brücke lag an der großen gallo-römischen Straße von Orléans nach Reims, die hier die Straße von Chartres nach Sens kreuzte. Zahlreiche archäologische Funde (darunter Sarkophage, Töpferwaren und Münzen aus einem merowingischen Friedhof) belegen, dass der Ort schon sehr früh besiedelt war
Der Ort wird von der hohen Silhouette der Kirche Saint-Etienne dominiert, die zwischen dem 12. und 15. Jh. erbaut, im 16. Jh. umgebaut und in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Die ältesten Teile sind der Chor, der aus zwei quadratischen Jochen besteht, und der an der Nordseite angebaute Glockenturm.
