Die Gemeinde mit über 400 Einwohnern besteht aus MATTON, einem Marktflecken, der sich am Ende eines kleinen Tals ausbreitet, das von einem Forellenbach entwässert wird, und dem Weiler CLEMENCY. Der Wald von Banel, der das Dorf von der belgischen Grenze trennt, war der Sammelplatz eines großen französisch-belgischen Maquis. Dieser fand im Juni 44 nach einem Angriff der Deutschen ein dramatisches Ende. (Siehe Gedenkstätte nahe der Grenze auf der Straße Carignan-Florenville). Die monumentale Kirche von Matton, die unter Napoleon III. fertiggestellt wurde, überragt das Dorf.
