Die Gemeinde ist in der wissenschaftlichen Welt bekannt, weil sie einer Stufe des Jura, dem Hettangien, ihren Namen gegeben hat. Sie besitzt eines der fünfzehn geologischen Reservate Frankreichs und das einzige in Lothringen. Sie ist außerdem eine Stadt mit einem bunten Kulturerbe und einer zweitausendjährigen Geschichte, da sie im Laufe der Jahrhunderte eine gallorömische Siedlung, ein Herrschaftsgebiet und eine Hochburg der Royalisten während der Französischen Revolution war. Die Stadt hat etwa 7650 Einwohner.
