Gravesend ist eine Hafenstadt im Verwaltungsbezirk Kent in England am Südufer der Themse mit etwa 51.400 Einwohnern. Sie verfügt zur Hilfe des Schiffsverkehrs auf der Themse über eine Lotsenstation. Seit dem 15. Jahrhundert können Passagiere von Gravesend aus mit dem Schiff nach London gelangen, seit 1562 besitzt Gravesend das Stadtrecht. Zu den wichtigsten Erzeugnissen gehören Papier, Zement und Gummiprodukte. 1617 starb hier auf der Heimreise die Indianerin Pocahontas. Der Name leitet sich vom englischen grove's und end ab. Aber im Domesday Book heißt das Dorf Gravesham .
