Whoolsthorpe ist berühmt für den Apfel von Newton. Oder zumindest ist das, was die Legende uns erzählt. Diese Legende besagt, dass Newton einen Apfel vom Baum fallen sah, der ihn inspirierte, seine Theorie über die Schwerkraft zu entwickeln. Er hielt sich in Whoolsthorpe im Alter von 25 Jahren auf, weil es damals einen Pestausbruch in Cambridge gab. Ein Nachfahre des Baumes kann jetzt in den Botanischen Gärten in Cambridge gesehen werden.
