Nachdem die schottische Armee Karl I. von England im Januar 1647 in Newcastle den Bevollmächtigten des Parlaments ausgeliefert hatte, wuchs in schottischen Kreisen die Sorge über die zunehmende Radikalisierung der Politik in England. Dabei ging es auch um das Schicksal des Königs, insbesondere nachdem dieser im Juni von George Joyce aus der Obhut der Parlamentsbevollmächtigten entführt worden war und nun unter der Kontrolle der New Model Army stand.
