Das Merton College ist eines der ältesten konstituierenden Colleges der University of Oxford. Seine Gründung lässt sich bis in die 1260er Jahre zurückverfolgen, als Walter of Merton, Lordkanzler von Heinrich III. und später Eduard I., erstmals Statuten für eine unabhängige akademische Gemeinschaft aufstellte und Stiftungen gründete, um diese zu unterstützen.
