Die Bank of England ist die Zentralbank des Vereinigten Königreichs Großbritannien und Nordirland und hat ihren Sitz in London. Das 1694 gegründete und 1946 verstaatlichte Institut erfüllte zeitweise neben administrativen auch privatwirtschaftliche Funktionen und bestimmt die Geld- und Währungspolitik für das Pfund Sterling.
Als König William III. und Königin Mary II. 1688 den Thron bestiegen, waren das Geld- und Kreditwesen zerrüttet, und auch die öffentlichen Finanzen befanden sich in einer schwierigen Lage.
