Amphipolis war eine antike griechische Polis, die durchgehend bis in die Spätantike als städtische Ansiedlung existierte. Sie erstreckt sich im Umkreis von mehreren Kilometern um die Akropolis der antiken Stadt. Die Ausgrabungen fanden vorwiegend in der Zeit von 1956 bis 1984 unter der Leitung des inzwischen verstorbenen Archäologen Dimitris Lazaridis statt. Nach seinem Tod führte seine Tochter, Calliope Lazaridis, die Arbeiten bis 1989 fort. 2012 wurde, unter der Leitung der Archäologin Katerina Peristeri, mit Ausgrabungen auf dem Kasta Hügel begonnen, bei dem die größte bisher in Griechenland entdeckte Grabanlage freigelegt wurde. Die Funde aus der Region sind im Archäologischen Museum in Amfipoli ausgestellt.
