Wer sind die Ladiner? Ein holländisches Wort für die Bewohner von Ladinien existiert nicht, aber sie selbst nennen sich Ladiner: 30.000 Bewohner von fünf Tälern, die wie die Arme eines Seesterns vom Sellaplatteau ausstrahlen. Ihre Sprache bildet mit dem Rhetoromanischen in der Schweiz und dem Friaulischen in Nordostitalien das letzte Überbleibsel des einst in den gesamten Alpen gesprochenen Kelto-Romanischen. Die ladinische Kultur kennt viele Legenden, in denen die Frau meistens entscheidet. Wenn doch einmal der Mann das Sagen hat, folgt das Unglück.
