Nachdem Filippo Brunelleschi den Wettkampf um das Design der Türen des Baptisteriums verloren hatte, brach er zu einer Studienreise auf. Überall maß er Dinge aus und studierte sie. Unter anderem besuchte er das Pantheon in Rom und war fasziniert von der Kuppel. Das war die größte Kuppel der antiken Welt. Dort erhielt er die Inspiration, eine solche Kuppel auf die Kirche Santa Maria del Fiore zu setzen, die seit Jahrhunderten unbedeckt war.
