Viterbo ist eine Stadt in Mittelitalien. Sie ist Sitz der Verwaltung der Provinz Viterbo in der Region Latium sowie Sitz eines römisch-katholischen Bistums und der Universität Tuscia.
Der etruskische Name der Stadt Surrena oder Surna ist unsicher. Die Römer nannten die Stadt Castrum Herculis. Der heutige Name, der im 8. Jahrhundert erstmals als Castrum Biterbi erwähnt wurde, leitet sich möglicherweise vom lateinischen Vetus Urbs her.
