Palazzolo ist der äußerste nördliche Ausläufer des Janiculum-Hügels, der sich in Richtung Vatikanhügel im Borgo-Rione in Rom erstreckt.
Der Toponym stammt von einigen römischen Ruinen, die sich auf dem Hügel befinden und "Palatiolum Neronis" genannt werden, da sie als Überreste eines kleinen Palastes von Nero angesehen werden. Im Mittelalter wurde es auch "mons Neronis", Palaceolum oder Palazzola genannt. Es wird zweimal in der Radierung Grande Veduta del Tempio e del Palazzo Vaticano erwähnt, die von Giovanni Maggi und Giacomo Mascardi im Jahr 1615 gestochen und von Pater Ehrle veröffentlicht wurde.
