Es liegt nordöstlich von Wolvega und hat etwas weniger als 900 Einwohner. Zum Dorf gehört auch die Siedlung Boekelte. Boijl könnte seinen Namen aus verschiedenen Quellen abgeleitet haben. Es ist daher schwierig, da es auf alten Karten als Buil, Beul und als Beuil geschrieben wird. Während es in dem vorläufigen Bannbrief von Bischof Guydo von Utrecht im vierzehnten Jahrhundert sogar als Boylo erwähnt wird.
