Waterland ist eine Region in der niederländischen Provinz Nordholland. Es ist ein niedrig gelegenes Moorwiesengebiet, das von vielen Gräben und Wasserwegen durchzogen wird. Der Untergrund bestand ursprünglich aus Torf, der auf Ablagerungen abgelagert wurde, die vom Meer hinterlassen wurden. Durch Überschwemmungen von der Zuidersee kam später eine Schicht Lehm darüber.
