Der Entdeckung der Silbermine am Numedalslågen 1623 verdankt die Stadt ihre Entstehung. Am 2. Mai 1624 durch König Christian IV. gegründet, entwickelte sie sich schnell zur größten Bergbaustadt Norwegens.
