Lillehammer ist eine Stadt in Norwegen. Sie liegt rund 180 Kilometer nördlich von Oslo, am Nordufer des Mjøsa-Sees im Gebirgstal Gudbrandsdalen. Sie wurde durch die Ausrichtung der XVII. Olympischen Winterspiele 1994 weltweit bekannt. Die Stadt war in der Folge auch Austragungsort einer Reihe weiterer bedeutender Sportveranstaltungen wie zum Beispiel der Handball-Europameisterschaft 2008. 2016 war Lillehammer Ausrichtungsort der Olympischen Jugend-Winterspiele.
Die erste Erwähnung Lillehammers findet sich in der Saga über Håkon Håkonsson, wonach die Birkebeiner im Winter 1204/1205 dort verweilt hätten, bevor sie über die Berge nach Østerdalen gezogen seien. An diese Großtat erinnern heute die nationalen Sportveranstaltungen Birkebeinerløypet , Birkebeinerrennet und Birkebeinerrittet . Außerdem existiert ein Pergament, in dem ein Thing von 1390 mit dem Namen „Lithlæ Hamars kirku garde“ erwähnt wird.
