Die Entwicklung des Stadtteils Campolide entstand aus der Konstruktion des Aqueduto das Águas Livres im 18. Jahrhundert. Die Bauarbeiter, die zum Bau der Wasserleitung herkamen mussten untergebracht werden. So begann sich die Nachbarschaft zu entfalten. Bis dahin war das Gebiet weitgehend ländlich, bestehend aus verstreuten Dörfern neben den reichen Wohngütern des Adels oder religiöser Orden.
