Die Kathedrale von OLV Himmelfahrt ist eines der wichtigsten Monumente von Évora. Als Évora 1166 von den Christen von den Muslimen zurückerobert wurde, begann man sofort mit dem Bau einer Kathedrale, die der Heiligen Jungfrau geweiht war. Die Kathedrale wurde 1204 geweiht. Das Gebäude weist sowohl romanische als auch gotische Stilmerkmale auf und wurde im Laufe der Jahrhunderte regelmäßig umgebaut. Im 14. Jahrhundert wurde an das Gebäude eine Vorhalle im reinen gotischen Stil hinzugefügt. Im 15. und 16. Jahrhundert fügte man den Chor, die Kanzel, die Taufkapelle und die Kapelle von OLV von Barmherzigkeit im manuelinischen Stil hinzu. Im 18. Jahrhundert folgte die Capilla Mayor im Barockstil.
