Elbistan ist der zweitgrößte Landkreis der türkischen Provinz Kahramanmaraş. Die Einwohnerzahl liegt bei etwa 142.168 Personen . Im Landkreis leben zum größten Teil alevitische Kurden . In den 1960er und 1970er Jahren sind viele Bürger der Stadt und des Landkreises als Gastarbeiter oder politisch Verfolgte nach Europa ausgewandert.
Der größte Ort im Landkreis Elbistan ist Demircilik mit 1493 Einwohnern und einem eigenen Dialekt. Ungefähr 3500 Menschen des Ortes leben heute bereits in der zweiten Generation im Ausland oder in größeren Städten der Türkei, wie Istanbul oder Ankara.
