Das stillgelegte Kernkraftwerk Duane Arnold mit einem Siedewasserreaktor liegt in Palo im US-Bundesstaat Iowa.
Der Reaktor wurde von General Electric gebaut. Wie bei allen Siedewasserreaktoren vom Typ Mark I wurde auch bei diesem statt der vorhergesagten Sicherheit von 90 % nur ein Wert von 10 % erreicht. Das bedeutet, dass im Falle eines Unfalls das Containment nicht standhalten würde und der Reaktordruckbehälter regelrecht zerplatzen würde. Folglich würde sich der Kern an der freien Luft befinden. Das beschriebene Szenario trat schließlich während der Nuklearkatastrophe von Fukushima ein, als es infolge eines Erdbebens mit anschließendem Tsunami zu einer Kernschmelze in drei Blöcken des Kernkraftwerks Fukushima Daiichi gekommen war.
