Novi Sad ist die zweitgrößte Stadt in Serbien, die Hauptstadt der Vojvodina und administratives Zentrum des Okrugs Južna Bačka.
Die Universitätsstadt besteht aus den Stadtteilen Novi Sad nördlich der Donau und Petrovaradin am Fuße der gleichnamigen Festung südlich der Donau. Laut Volkszählung von 2011 hat die Stadt 231.798 Einwohner. Im Großraum der Opština Novi Sad leben 341.625 Einwohner. Die Stadt liegt auf einer Höhe von 72 bis 80 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel. In Novi Sad mündet der Kleine Batschka-Kanal in die Donau. Die Stadt wird auch als serbisches Athen bezeichnet.
