The Rofenache originates from the Hintereisferner below the Weißkugel at around 2500 m above sea level. It flows through the Rofental in a northeast direction, first taking in the Kesselwandbach, shortly after the Hochjochbach, and after about 5 km, it receives the Vernagtbach fed by the Vernagtferner and Guslarferner from the left. It passes the hamlet of Rofen and merges with the Niedertalbach at Vent after nearly 11 km to form the Venter Ache. In the lower course, the Ache has carved into the narrow Rofenschlucht. Sometimes the Rofenache, along with the Venter Ache, is considered the upper course of the Ötztaler Ache, which has a total length of 66.5 km.
