Already in the 11th or at the beginning of the 12th century, a first Romanesque church was built at this location. In the early 13th century, it was replaced by a new place of worship, constructed in Schelde Gothic style.
From the very beginning, the church faced stability issues due to unskilled interventions. In the 18th century, the cracks and fissures were hidden under a plaster layer, several windows were bricked up, and houses and shops were built against the outer walls.
The St. Nicholas Church was from its inception the church of the wealthy merchants and guilds that conducted their activities at the Grain Market and the port at Gras- and Korenlei. In the church, they had their own chapel, hence the wealth of artistic treasures.
Along with the building, they are being restored and reinstated in the interior.
