If you follow Leopold II Avenue along the park towards the Casino, you are roughly following the route of the rampart that the Spaniards built around Ostend in the 16th century. To the right lies the old town, while to the left there was then a bastion, which is a pentagonal extension with a moat around it, on which artillery was stationed to repel an attack. About where the Great Post is now located, there was then a 'west gate' that provided access to the city.
As early as 1861-1862, the Leopold Park was created on military domain, diagonally opposite the west gate. In 1865, work began on demolishing the rampart, which had no military use anymore. This led in 1866-1870 to an enlargement of the park and a redesign in 'English style', with ponds and paths in loose, irregular shapes that can give the impression that it is a piece of 'pure nature'.
