Do not look for a connection between Zonnebeke and the sun; in 1072 the village was called Sinnebecche. After the devastating bombings of World War I, the Our Lady Church was rebuilt and consecrated in 1924. The church, with a roof made of reinforced concrete, is considered the first modern church in this country. In 2004, the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 was opened, as a successor to the former Regional Museum. As a visitor, you are guided through the five battles that raged around Ypres. In addition to an extensive collection of photographs, historical objects are also on display, and you can descend into a British 'dug-out' or a German trench.
