Talbot House

In the midst of the colorful metropolis that Poperinge - the town behind the front - was during WWI, chaplain Philip Tubby Clayton opened a soldiers' house on December 11, 1915. The large family home of the Coevoet family was transformed into "Every Man's Club." All soldiers, regardless of rank or status, were welcome. The name Talbot House refers to Gilbert Talbot, the brother of the chief army chaplain, who was killed at the age of 23. Gilbert became the symbol of the sacrifice of a 'golden generation' of young men. Talbot House provided an alternative to the dissolute nightlife in the city. For hundreds of thousands, this place grew into "a home from home," where they found a bit of humanity, rest, and peace. More than half a million soldiers passed through Talbot House between 1915 and 1918. Today, Talbot House serves as "a living museum," with accommodation and a fully equipped kitchen. Over the years, Talbot House has grown into an international meeting place. In addition to the many authentic curiosities, visitors can see an audiovisual montage that connects the past, present, and future of this unique house.
