The Palace of the Nation in Brussels is the seat of the Federal Parliament of Belgium. It is the seat of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The first stone of the Palace of the Nation was laid in 1779 under Austrian rule. It was built on the orders of Maria Theresa of Austria by Barnabé Guimard in classicist style. In 1783, it was completed after the death of the commissioning client. The building first served as the headquarters of the Sovereign Council of Brabant, the highest court and administrative body of the duchy of Brabant. Under French rule, the courts were housed there, with prisons for the prostitutes in the cellars.
