Writer Charles Baudelaire was not a big fan of Belgium. Although he was very enthusiastic when he arrived in Brussels, after a while he spewed a lot of criticism of his new home. But the other cities of Belgium that he visited also had to suffer. Only Mechelen and Namur could count on the mercy of the literary grandmaster. In his book Brutopia, Pascal Verbeken quotes Baudelaire as follows: "If Mechelen were not in Belgium and inhabited by Flemings, I would want to live there and especially die there".
