Kortrijk

Kortrijk Communal Cemetery is a British military cemetery containing casualties from the First and Second World Wars, located in the Belgian city of Kortrijk. The cemetery is situated 1.4 km west of the Grote Markt along the Meensesteenweg. The enclosed plot is against the northwestern wall within the Urban Cemetery of Sint-Jan. The Cross of Sacrifice stands at the center of the site, which is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. There are 255 dead buried here.
Kortrijk was in German hands for almost the entire war. The Urban Cemetery was heavily used and expanded by the Germans, especially after the Allied bombing of the railway junction in April 1915, which resulted in many casualties. In October 1918, the city was taken by the 12th Royal Irish Rifles. Field Hospital No. 44 stayed in Kortrijk for a week and was then followed for eight months by Field Hospital No. 62. They created a plot in the northwestern part of the cemetery where they buried the fallen British soldiers. After the armistice, this plot was expanded with casualties from the German plots and La Madeleine Cemetery.
