A historical name that largely coincides with the Kempen region is Toxandria. It coincided with the habitat of the Toxandrians (or Texuandri). These were a West Germanic tribe that had settled in present-day North Brabant (the Netherlands) and Antwerp (Flanders) in the first centuries after the beginning of the era. All that is known about this tribe is its location (briefly described by Pliny in his Naturalis Historia). It is suggested that they would be a remnant of the formerly largely exterminated Eburones at the top. The Ambivarites mentioned by Julius Caesar are also counted among their possible ancestors. In the middle of the fourth century, the Franks settled as foederati in Toxandria. It is not clear whether the Toxandri were expelled or whether they merged into the great tribal association of the Franks. The latter seems likely.
