Centre of Flanders

In 1999, under the guidance of the Leuven professor Van der Waeteren, a number of students searched for the geographical centre of Flanders. Determining this point was an assignment that was carried out by 4 civil engineering students and their work leader. The centre of Flanders was determined in Opdorp near the 3-provinces point in the Biesten. On 24 February, the press was summoned and the student group pointed out the exact location. This caused some consternation as it was located on the plantation field of a farmer who was obviously not happy with the proposal to turn his property into a tourist attraction. After the press fuss at the time, it became quiet around the center. It was also not at all ideal: rather lost at the beginning of a field in Opdorp, close to the border with St.-Amands, accessible via a country road, no houses nearby. In 2001 the thread was picked up again and the municipality of Buggenhout decided to purchase a plot of land, located near the midpoint. On this plot of 240 m² there is now the artwork 'Het Middelpunt', by the Opdorp sculptor Roger Van Den Eede, a bench and an information board. On Sunday 25 May 2003, during the Day of the Park, this park was officially inaugurated by the city council. So the 'real' geographical centre is in the field a few dozen metres from this monument?
