From the beginning of the Second World War, the Germans took measures
to arm the coasts of the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean by building the Atlantic Wall.
As a port, Ostend was one of the focal points of the Belgian part of the
Atlantic Wall. Not only along the coastline itself, but also in the harbour and in the hinterland
numerous bunkers appeared. Some of these constructions belonged to the so-called
'second line'.
An example of this is the field battery 'Stene' on the Schorrestraat in Stene. This was intended to defend the port of Ostend on the land side and to fire on the beach in the event of an enemy landing from the sea.
