Burnt petroleum tanks

The site of the "burned petroleum tanks" was a strategically important point during World War I on the front line at Diksmuide for many years. It is now only marked by a name stone. After the Battle of the Yser at the beginning of World War I, the Germans still held some positions on the western bank of the Yser. The Petroleum Tanks site was one of them. It owes its name - quite clearly - to 2 large petroleum tanks that were located here (and which were, of course, completely destroyed during the Battle of the Yser). From here, the Germans could fire on the Belgian positions at the level of milepost 16 along the Yser. This Belgian advanced position was extremely dangerous - partly because it was constantly under fire from the Germans from the "Petroleum Tanks." This site is therefore better known as "the Death Gang."
