The Castle of Opdorp

Opdorp was a free seigneury. This turned Opdorp into a kind of immunity area. The lords of Opdorp and his people had a great deal of autonomy in administrative and judicial matters. Apparently, this also meant that Opdorp was a paradise for smugglers and refugees.

Of course, the lords of Opdorp had a castle. The castle was first mentioned in the 16th century as a walled castle. After several renovations, the old castle was finally completely demolished in 1887 to make way for a new castle. In 1948 it came into the hands of the Fathers of the Sacred Heart who housed a boys' home in it.

Since 1984, the local history museum Ter Palen has also been housed there. Using utensils, photographs, tools and models, they want to illustrate the daily life of our grandparents.
