Asper is a village in the Belgian province of East Flanders and a part of the municipality of Gavere. It had 4,234 inhabitants on December 31, 2005. Asper is located by the Scheldt. It is the only part of Gavere that lies on the opposite side of the Scheldt. Some remains from the Old Stone Age and the Middle Stone Age have been found in the area. From the New Stone Age onwards, more archaeological evidence was discovered, such as remnants of a Roman settlement from the 1st to 3rd century AD and a Merovingian cemetery indicating the possible presence of a settlement from that time, which may have developed into present-day Asper.
