Asper

Asper is a village in the Belgian province of East Flanders and a part of the municipality of Gavere. On December 31, 2005, it had 4,234 inhabitants. Asper is located on the Scheldt.

Asper was an independent municipality until the end of 1976. In 1977, it became a part of the municipality of Gavere.

- The St. Martin's Church
- Towards Zingem - Steenweg 1 - is the former poorhouse. It was founded in 1863 by Sabina De Groote, who had been a widow of P. Fr. De Bock since 1836. It was originally managed by laypeople, only to be taken over by the religious community of the Sacred Heart of Mary from Nederbrakel in 1896. Until 1927, it served as a retirement home. It is now owned by the OCMW and is regularly used as an exhibition space by IERMA (Ideas - Expressions of Real Modern Art). Edmond de Perre-Montigny was the architect. On the front facade, there is a commemorative stone with the text: founded by Miss Sabina De Groote, housewife of Mr. P. FR. De Bock, deceased in Asper on April 30, 1836. In Asper, the building is known as the Court of the Vandenberghe brothers, a former owner.

At the level of Asper lies a lock on the Scheldt. In 2007, work began on this lock, and a new navigation route was dug. In 2010, the duplication will be a fact. It is one of the few municipalities that is separated from its main municipality by a natural intervention.
