Maissin

Maissin is a village in the Belgian province of Luxembourg and part of the municipality of Paliseul. The village is located in the northern part of the municipality, near the upper reaches of the Lesse. At the end of the ancien régime, Maissin became a municipality. In 1823, the municipality was already abolished and merged with Glaireuse in Villance. In 1895, Maissin was re-separated and re-established as an independent municipality. In August 1914, a battle took place in the municipality between German and French troops, resulting in the death of 4,782 soldiers. The nearby military memorial accommodates 282 French and 513 Germans in individual graves. 3,001 other French soldiers are divided into two ossuaries; 643 French and 343 Germans lie in a mixed ossuary. The Battle of Maissin was the only French victory in the first year of the war on Belgian territory. During the municipal mergers in 1977, it became a part of Paliseul.
